Ko te rangatiratanga o te tangata, o te rōpū rānei ki te whakatau i ngā take mōna anō, mō te hapori rānei; ki te ārahi i te iwi; ki te mahi i tētahi mahi; ki te tohutohu rānei i tangata kē. Ka whakaaetia whānuihia te mana i raro i ngā tikanga o te iwi, o te hapori rānei, i raro rānei i ngā ture o te whenua. Ko te mana o ētahi, he mana tuku iho i ōna kāwai whakapapa; ko te mana o ētahi ka hua ake i āna mahi whakahirahira; ko te mana o ētahi ka riro i a ia i te pouaka pōti. 

The right and ability of a person or group to make decisions for themselves or the community, to be a leader of people, to undertake certain activities, or to direct others. Mana is widely endorsed under the customary practices of a tribe or community, or under the law of the land. For some, mana is inherited through their lines of genealogy; for some, mana is a result of their great deeds; for some, mana is achieved through the ballot box.
