Nitrogen is an element, a colourless, odourless gas. It is essential to all organisms for the production of protein. Nitrogen is absorbed from the soil as an important nutrient for plants. Almost 80% of the Earth’s atmosphere is nitrogen, existing as nitrogen molecules which have two atoms joined as pairs (N2). It is used in the manufacturing of food, drugs, fertiliser, dye and explosives.
