He taputapu ā-ringa ka mātua whakamahia hei tārai, hei whakairo rākau. He mata koi kei tētahi pito hei tapahi i te rākau, he mea hanga ki te maitai. He puringa kei tētahi pito. Ka paoa te pane o te puringa ki te kuru e panaia whakamua ai te mata o te whao i te rākau.
A hand tool, mainly used to shape and carve timber. One end has a sharp blade for cutting the wood which is made from steel. One end has a handle. The head of the handle is struck with a mallet in order to push the blade of the chisel forward in the wood.
