WHAKAMĀRAMA

He tipu māori, he nui te kitea i Aotearoa whānui, he roa ōna whā, he kōekoeko ngā pito. He kōwhiuwhiu te āhua o te noho ā-whānau o ngā whā i te pū harakeke, ko te rito ki waenganui. Mātua whakamahia ai te harakeke i roto i ngā tūmomo raranga maha, te whatu, me te whiri.

A native plant commonly seen throughout Aotearoa, which has long pointed leaves. The leaves grow together in a fan-like fashion, with the new growth in the middle of the fan. Harakeke is widely used in many types of weaving and plaiting.

Whakamahia ai te harakeke i te maha o ngā momo raranga, pērā i te raranga kete, raranga whāriki hoki. Ka tīhorea ngā whā kia ōrite ai te whānui. I ētahi wā, ka tāwaitia kia whai kano, ka kōhuatia rānei ki te wai kia ngohengohe.

Mā te waku i te whā harakeke ki tētahi mata koi, e tīhorea atu ai te kiko kākāriki, arā, te kiritai, kia toitū ai te muka. Ka kīia ko te hāro tēnei mahi. Whakamahia ai te muka hei whiri taura, hei whiri kupenga ika, otirā hei raranga kete rauangi, hei whatu kākahu:

He harakeke tēnei kua oti te whakarite hei mahi piupiu. Kua hāroa ngā wāhi pango kia toitū ai te muka, ā, koia anahe ngā wāhi e mau ai te waitae pango:
