He kōrero tuku iho e mōhio whānuitia ana, he tikanga kei roto e huna ana. Ko ētahi, he kōrero mō ngā atua, pērā i ngā pūrākau mō Māui-tikitiki-a-Taranga. Ko ētahi, he kōrero mō te pūtakenga mai o ngā mea o te taiao, pērā i te toka, te manu me te awa.

A traditional story that is well known, which has layers of understanding. Some are stories about the gods such as those pertaining to Māui. Some are stories portraying the origins of aspects of the natural world such as a rock, birds and rivers.
