An agreement between certain Māori tribes and the English monarchy, whereby the tribes retained their sovereignty over the land and the authority to determine laws. The confederation of tribes would protect English settlers, and England would prevent the arrival of other nations to claim authority in Aotearoa. The declaration was initially signed at Waitangi in October 1835 by 34 northern chiefs and James Busby, England's representative. By 1839 there were a total of 52 signatures of tribal chiefs.
