A type of plant which is found on trees and rocks. Lichen is made up of two types of organisms living as one, namely fungi and algae. The fungi acts to hold water and the algae produces food through the process of photosynthesis. When lichen lives on a rock it acts to break down the rock over a long period of time - a natural process where a rock is broken down to become soil.
